Framboidal pyrite usually have a spheroidal or sub-spheroidal outer form. Framboidal pyrite are aggregates of discrete, equidimensional and equimorphic micro-crystals with a distinct microstructure.
What is the formation process of Framboidal pyrite?
Possible formation processes are-
- Nucleation and growth of initial monosulfide micro-crystal.
- Conversion of micro-crystals to greigite (Fe3S4).
- Aggregation of uniformly sized greigite micro-crystals that is framboidal growth.
- Replacement of greigite framboids with pyrite framboids.
Do you Know?
“Fool’s gold” is a common nickname for pyrite. Pyrite received that nickname because it is worth virtually nothing, but has an appearance that “fools” people into believing that it is gold.
What is greigite?
Greigite is iron sulfide mineral (Fe3S4). It is metastable with respect to pyrite. Greigite occur in sediments formed under anoxic conditions.
